Instrument Panel Conversion
DX trim line civics do not come with a tachometer on the instrument panel i was wondering if anyone has heard of someone converting their instrument panel for that of an EX civic. Or any of you habitual web surfers if you could help me find something because i cant find much .
I am sure It can be done, but there is a few factors that will work into it. One you need to make sure you have all the proper sensors to run the cluster, such as a speed sensor and stuff to get the tach working properly. You will also need to get the millage set right on the new cluster or you will run into issues with getting the car titled and tagged. And I dont really know how the civic clusters work, but I know some clusters need a special code that needs to be programed into the cars computer so it is able to speak with the new cluster.
Your easist and probally cheapest bet is just to buy a monster tach and mount it somewhere on the dash... I think they are ugly, but unless you can find an easier way to swap the cluster you may be SOL...
****EDIT****
I did some searching around, and I could find info on newer civics, and older crx's couldnt really find much on the early 90's civics like I think you have. But it looks like it can be done, and that it is fairly simple. Only issue is you have to find a cluster with the same miles as you have on the car, or have a speedshop adjust the millage on the cluster which seems to run somewhere around 100$...

well i had a monster tach but i sold it because i couldnt bring myself to own it. I plan on tagging and having the car titled before i do the conversion so i could care less about how well the miles match up ill keep the car until the junkyard can have it.
Just do some google searches.. It looks like it can be done fairly simple. It may just be plug and play...

But aren't you going to have to install a gear / sensor of some sort to pick up on the RPM reading for the tach? If its not in the cluster already, its probably not in the wiring harness either.
Tom that is what I orginally thought, but after doing some research it didnt look that way.
Think of it like this there are 3 different models/trims underneath the unbrella known as civic. All 3 trims have different options. When it comes down to wirining why would Honda design and create 3 different wiring harnesses to work with the 3 different trims when they can create one that is universal to all civics. Then off of this one universal wiring harness they can power and run all the different options that they want to put in the different trim lines. It cuts down on cost of production and ease of keeping track from the get go which civic shell will be which trim.. Make sence..

After researching some honda forums it appears that it is simply a plug and play process. Makes no sense to me why they wouldnt just use more universal parts such as a tach on all models, come on now even minivans come with tachs now lol.
on his car the guages are electonic....thus meaning all the info should be coming from his ecu, and regardless of the fact that the car does or does not have a tach shouldnt matter either way the ecu still knows where the rmps are.
your dinosaur of a car...haha just playin....has mech guages that do need those sensors due to the fact its not pulling anything from the ecu.

God created turbo lag to give V8's a chance.
I like my Dino-cars dammit! They are much easier to do an engine swap on
But, I see what you mean by the ECU having all that info already.
