Custom '72 Stereo Install
by CStingray78
Hey all,
Well, the time has come to upgrade the Stereo in my '72 Vette. I was looking at doing something like from this post:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=639763
Go down to where CF6873 posted his pics. Its kinda like what I did in the '78 Vette, but in this car I am even more strapped for space. From the top of the compartment, a door drops down to store the removable rear window, and the majority of the space is taken up by storing the T-Tops. I don't know if building boxes will work very well because of the limited space. I guess I am looking for any suggestions into what I can do to setup the new stereo system. The front speakers will be no problem, I have an idea for that already. My stumbling block will be with the storage area and accomodating 6x9 Speakers.
Thanks for the help!

I cant wait to hear what this will sound like when you get it complete. Your first vette sounded damn awsome when that sound was cranking.

Well, I have begun the process once again... Took this past weekend and removed the seats, console, and now working on the dash. I can't believe how many connections there are in the back of that biatch.
I will post pictures of the step by step.

Well, the Stereo is all in and actually functioning, It is a major step up from the tape deck and 2 4x6 speakers. Here are a few pics from the prior steps. I will take some more before I finally put the dash back together. Did a few other odds and ends while the dash was apart like replacing the electric movement in my dash clock with a new quartz movement. Now, I shouldn't have the problem of the clock stopping on me every now and then.

UPDATE:

Damn that is a shit load of wires back there..

Yeah, sorry for the pictures being so dark, but every time I got home from work to take the pictures it would be getting dark outside around 5:30. WTF
Anyways, all those wires are from a '72, and I can't imagine what goes on behind the dash of a new vehicle with all the computer controls. I would call this "simple" compared to a new car. Also, Joe and I helped Rob put a stereo in his '79 T/A and boy had that thing been rigged over the years. What a MESS!
But, we got him all squared away and it took me the weekend to get my car stereo all in. But, with this damn day light savings time, I KNOW it will be dark by the time I get home every day this week. guess it will have to wait till the weekend.

Yeah, I just wanted to thank Tom and Joe again for helping me with my stereo equipment. The previous setup was really F*ing rigged, so it would have sucked to deal with by myself. And I can't wait to hear the tunes from the '72!!

Finally got it all back together today...
The new Kenwood head unit and the dash in a mess.

The mounted Rockford AMP and Component Filters. (Behind the seats)

Tweeters mounted on each Pillar.

And the finished Dash cluster... WITH A FUNCTIONING CLOCK! It has come a long way from the original stereo and dash molded for 2 post systems.

Completed rear shot looking back into the storage compartment. 6x9 boxes built to fit between the wheel wells and the mounted AMP and Filters.

I will tell you that the little boxes I did have to build did not have the same bass response that the custom corner fit boxes have in the '78. I did, however, fill the boxes with some poly fill (JoAnn Fabrics Specialty) and it made a big difference. I recommend stuffing any speaker boxes to produce more bass.

Dude, it looks like it's AWESOME! I'm really glad things worked out well for this car stereo!! Can't wait to hear it!

Now if I could only drive it too... I look pretty lame out there listening to Godsmack or Disturbed and "cruising" on Jack Stands!

Well at least you get good gas millage that way..
